The director of NetLab UFRJ, Marie Santini, took part, between December 7 and 10, in the meeting organized by the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) in Cape Town, South Africa, which brought together two of its Scientific Panels. The meeting took place at the University of Cape Town.
Marie Santini was part of the Scientific Panel on Indexing the Global Information Environment, a group that is at an advanced stage of research, with work being prepared for academic publication and dialogue with public policymakers. During the meeting, the panel discussed the limitations of existing indicators—often based on data and assumptions from the Global North—and the scientific challenges related to building global indicators for the information environment.
Among the topics discussed were the recognition of structural biases in the production of indicators; the proposal of a layered indexing architecture that combines a common core with regionally sensitive modules tailored to local contexts; and the need for conceptual precision and audience differentiation, considering researchers, public administrators, and funders. The discussions sought to advance methodological decisions and the development of ongoing scientific articles.
Marie Santini’s participation reinforces the presence of NetLab UFRJ and highlights the importance of Brazil in international spaces of scientific production dedicated to a critical understanding of the information environment and to the development of methodologies that take global inequalities in the circulation, measurement, and governance of information into account.
