NetLab UFRJ has presented its contribution to the public consultation on the sustainability of environmental and Amazon-focused journalism, held by the Secretariat for Social Communication of the Presidency of the Republic (Secom/PR). The imput consists in a set of recommendations based on scientific evidence and diagnoses produced from our research on the subject, which aims to strengthen environmental journalism's informative and democratic role in a scenario of underfunding, reduced teams, and growing pressure on content circulation from digital platforms.

Based on this analysis, the document prepared by NetLab UFRJ highlights the need for public policies that ensure adequate structural conditions for environmental coverage, including funding mechanisms, incentives for specialized training, and regulation of information distribution in digital environments. Such measures are fundamental to expanding transparency around socio-environmental issues, ensuring accountability from the actors involved, and encouraging civil society to participate in the defense of the Amazon.

To that end, NetLab UFRJ organizes its recommendations around three main pillars: economic sustainability, informational integrity, and the value of scientific knowledge in journalistic production. The contribution presented seek to support policy creation which can ensure high-quality information about the Amazon is produced, an essential element in the protection of its ecosystems and for the strengthening of citizenship.
