Without Consent: Social Media Ads Promote Fake Sexual Videos of Paolla Oliveira Created Using Artificial Intelligence
Generative artificial intelligence has made it easier to produce and disseminate non-consensual intimate images, exacerbating sexual violence against women due to the low cost, widespread availability of these tools, and the ease with which images can be distributed across digital platforms.
In recent years, NetLab UFRJ has identified the promotion of fraudulent and abusive advertisements on social media platforms, which profit from their distribution and expand their reach through microtargeting. This exposes users to an unsafe environment in which content linked to the exploitation of vulnerabilities and gender-based violence proliferates.
In this study, we identified hundreds of advertisements on Meta platforms that misuse the image of actress Paolla Oliveira to lure users to Telegram, where sexually explicit deepfakes depicting her are distributed, exploiting the platforms’ advertising services to gain reach and sell illegal products.
Although Brazilian legislation already recognizes these practices as forms of violence against women, the findings indicate systemic failures by Meta and Telegram to prevent and remove this type of content, undermining the protection of women and girls and the guarantee of a safe digital environment.
