The Social Media Data Transparency Index is an initiative of NetLab UFRJ, developed in partnership with the University of Cambridge, which systematically and complexly assesses the level of data access offered by large digital platforms.
The research analyzes 15 platforms in three different regulatory contexts—European Union, United Kingdom, and Brazil—comparing environments with different levels of regulation. The index measures access to two central types of data: user-generated content and advertising data, fundamental to understanding the functioning of the platforms and their social and political impacts.
Based on data quality principles such as accessibility, reliability, and usability, the study assesses not only whether access exists, but under what conditions it occurs. The results point to a scenario of widespread low transparency, with specific limitations to independent scrutiny, regardless of the regulatory context.
The index seeks to contribute to public debate, support policy formulation, and strengthen accountability in the digital environment.
