Proceedings of the 22nd National Meeting of Journalism Researchers
The local media's "news deserts" in the Legal Amazon are fertile ground for socio-environmental disinformation, which discredits the work of organized civil society.
The article investigates local media coverage of the work of socio-environmental organizations in the region, before and during the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on NGOs, which took place in 2023.
We systematically analyzed 2,261 articles to map the framing of the topic and the characters mentioned, in addition to identifying signs of content reproduction and amplified sources to understand who sets the agenda and how coverage of the region is characterized. Attacks on NGOs predominate, with a lot of reproduction of content from news agencies, portals linked to agribusiness and hyper-partisan websites.
The results demonstrate the fragility of local Amazonian media, which is subject to the anti-environmental interests of actors with political and economic influence in the region.
