The National Consumer Secretariat, an agency linked to the Ministry of Justice, published a technical note last week determining new transparency rules for digital platforms operating in Brazil. The Secretariat will now require companies to adhere to the same transparency criteria that they already adopt in the European Union. With this measure, platforms will have four months to comply with transparency standards for advertisements, and one year for data transparency standards.
The Technical Note was based on the Transparency Indexes that are being developed by NetLab UFRJ within the scope of the Observatory of the Disinformation Industry and its Impact on Consumer Relations in Brazil, a project carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Justice. The indexes evaluate digital platforms and advertising networks operating in Brazil according to their transparency practices, and will be published in the second half of this year.
The discussion about the transparency of digital platforms becomes even more important as the 2024 elections approach. With just over two months to go until the election, the candidates for the positions of councilor and mayor have been defined, and the pre-election campaign is already in full swing on social media.
