Held between the 10th and 12th of July, the 2013 edition of the biannual congress of the Latin Union of Political Economy of Information, Communication and Culture (ULEPICC) invited researchers from the Internet and Social Network Studies Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (NetLab UFRJ) to discuss emerging issues involving communication and technology today.

The event, themed “Communication, policies and industry: digitalization and crisis processes, their impacts and regulation”, was hosted by the National University of Quilmes, in Argentina. The congress brought together researchers working in the political economy of communication to debate issues surrounding technological advancement in different areas of society.

The NetLab UFRJ study “New mediators of cultural consumption on the Internet: the emerging market of online music Recommendation Systems”, presented by Rose Marie Santini, brought to the debate table an analysis of recommendation systems linked to audiovisual consumption in digital networks.
