Digital platforms blocked 41.4 million pieces of content in the first half of 2025 alone in European Union countries based on user requests, according to the bloc's official database. This number exceeds the 29.7 million restrictions recorded throughout the entire year of 2024. According to a sample analyzed by NetLab, the digital studies center at UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), big tech companies respond to 21% to 35% of notifications for post removal.

In July, data shows that 9 million pieces of content have already been restricted on websites in Europe due to local regulations. 2025 will see a record number of data banned from the internet by European countries.

The debate over regulating what can and cannot be published on social media and the internet in general has gained even more prominence now due to pressure from the United States government, which is critical of the European model. US President Donald Trump (Republican) classifies the method used by the European Union as censorship.
