Meta Ads: printed voting ballots and attacks on electoral integrity

In the first week of August, research by NetLab UFRJ and an experiment by Global Witness pointed out flaws in the Meta Ads system in combating misinformation on the integrity of the Brazilian elections.

On August 16, after a report was published by the newspaper O Globo on the NetLab study, Meta announced a change to combat the problem.

The company's new advertising policy now considers questioning electoral integrity as disinformation. The company declared that it had started to ban advertisements questioning the legitimacy of the Brazilian elections.

To assess whether this change had been applied, we investigated all ads available in the Meta Ads Library published between August 16-31, 2022 related to electoral integrity, including ads running on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network.
