Meta asked Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) to reject the request made by the Office of the Attorney General (AGU) to anticipate the effects of the ruling that discusses the responsibility of social networks for illegal content published by users. In the statement sent to the Court on Tuesday, the 27th, the company argued that granting a precautionary measure, as requested by the AGU, “would undermine the collegiate debate” and “create practical effects based on a thesis not yet consolidated.”
Based on a report from the School of Communication at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (NetLab), the federal government stated there is evidence of misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) through fraudulent boosting of ads on Meta’s platforms. The study identified 1,170 fraudulent ads using AI and unauthorized appropriation of images of authorities — among them, 300 ads about false INSS (social security) compensations linked to frauds investigated by the Federal Police.
