Founder and director of Netlab, the Internet and Social Media Studies Laboratory at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Marie Santini conducts research, teaching, and outreach activities between the university and civil society focused on disinformation. She is a research member of the European VOX-Pol Network of Excellence, funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), which focuses on the prevalence, contours, and impacts of violent online political extremism. In this role, she is following a decision by Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) that could break the legal shield protecting big tech companies.
