CPDP Latam 2025, the leading conference on data governance, privacy, and technology in Latin America, was held on July 16th and 17th, with the central theme "Data Governance for Development and Democracy in the Global Majority".
The panel "Access to Data on Digital Platforms by Researchers: A Comparative View", hosted by the Legal Fronts Institute and the Center for Technology and Society on Thursday (17), focused on the legal and institutional possibilities for consolidating the right to access data for research purposes.
Representing NetLab UFRJ, Director and Researcher Marie Santini presented the Advertising Transparency Index on Social Media Platforms (ITP), a tool for evaluating mechanisms for accessing data on promoted publications and monetized content on the main social media platforms operating in Brazil.
Also participating in the panel were Marina Lucena, moderator and coordinator of the Center for Internet Governance Studies at Legal Fronts; Ignacio Sanchez Gonzalez, professor at the Institute of International Studies at the University of Chile; and Ximena Cuzcano Chavez, Digital Security and Resilience Analyst at the organization Derechos Digitales.
Among the main points discussed were the lack of specific legislation in Brazil on the topic, with the debate focused on Bill No. 2120/2023; European regulations on researchers' access to data; and the discontinuation of tools such as Meta's CrowdTangle, which hindered the monitoring of ads and disinformation in both Europe and Latin America.
