Socio environmental disinformation as propaganda: A cross-platform analysis of the Yanomami crisis

Anais do 32° Encontro Anual da COMPÓS

In January 2023, a public health emergency was declared in the Yanomami territory. Against this backdrop it is necessary to understand to what extent the regulatory dismantling and the socio-environmental crisis in the indigenous territory were accompanied by a cross-platform strategy of disinformation dissemination used by the Brazilian extreme right.

Therefore, the purpose of this research is to analyze the impact of the Yanomami crisis on different platforms to understand the strategies, characters and narratives of disinformation used as a way to discredit the seriousness of the situation and delegitimize the indigenous population.

Our study indicates that the extreme right characterized the crisis as a “farce of the left”, relativizing the impact of mining, exalting the army and attacking environmental NGOs.

We demonstrate that disinformation about the Yanomami crisis was instrumentalized by the political agenda of former President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies.
