After banning political ads, Google will prioritize information from the TSE in searches about elections

Jornal O Globo - June 5, 2024

In 2024, Google will renew its partnership with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to highlight information from the court itself in searches about elections. Users who ask questions about “voter registration,” “how to vote,” and “where to vote” will be directed to official information from the court.

The big tech company will also include more links from the TSE in the panel that displays the results about the election, which will be highlighted on the days of the first and second rounds. Last year, according to the company, the panel with results represented 30% of all search traffic in Brazil on the day of the presidential election.

Despite the decision, an analysis by Netlab, a laboratory at UFRJ, indicates that the company “has not been consistent or efficient” in applying its policies on content considered irregular. Researchers identified seven advertisers publishing political-electoral content after the deadline established by the TSE.
