Heads of State include the topic of disinformation in G20 debates for the first time

Jornal Nacional - November 12, 2024

In Rio de Janeiro, the meeting of G20 leaders will have something new: they will discuss ways to combat one of the greatest evils of modern society.

The fight against disinformation on digital platforms and social networks should gain space in the final declaration of the G20. The text began to be negotiated on Tuesday (12) in Rio de Janeiro by the sherpas - representatives of the leaders of the main economies of the planet.

Researcher Marie Santini, founder of the Internet Studies Laboratory at UFRJ, participated in the preparation of a document - also signed by scholars from Ireland, the United States and Thailand - that defends rules to control disinformation on platforms and social networks. The suggestions have already been delivered to the G20.

"We are not talking about misinformation in retail, which is one thing or another that you receive, which is a lie, which may be untrue. We are talking about an industry that operates in a coordinated and organized manner, much like organized crime, and which is becoming increasingly powerful and more profitable due to this lack of regulation", says Marie Santini, director of NetLab/UFRJ.
