NetLab researchers debate the lack of transparency of digital platforms at Rio Market 2023

Last Wednesday (04/10) Rio Market 2023 kicked off, a business event linked to the Festival do RioFestival do Rio - Rio de Janeiro Int'l Film Festival, which is in its 25th edition.


The program included debate panels and free workshops, as well as business rounds with major figures in the audiovisual market and other activities related to the sector.


This Friday (06/10), the director of the Internet and Social Media Studies Laboratory at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (NetLab UFRJ), Marie Santini, alongside the vice-president of WMcCann RJ and also a researcher at NetLab , Marcio Borges, presented the panel “The Opacity of Digital Platforms and its Consequences for the Advertising and Audiovisual Market”.


In the presentation, the lack of transparency of digital platforms was discussed and how this factor contributes to the existence of a market that monetizes disinformation, feeding a web of social and economic problems related to it. From this introduction, the panel continued to address important research topics, such as the regulation of so-called ‘Big Techs’ and their profits obtained from advertising.


The opening ceremony of Rio Market 2023 welcomed personalities such as Walkiria Barbosa, general director of the event and the Festival do Rio - Rio de Janeiro Int'l Film Festival; Tiago Mafra, director of Ancine; Marcelo Calero, Secretary of Culture of the city of Rio de Janeiro; and Leonardo Edde, producer and vice-president of Firjan.
