On Thursday (24), in Brasília, the Ministry of Women held the BRICS Women's Ministerial Meeting, with the participation of ministers Cida Gonçalves, Esther Dweck, Macaé Evaristo, Anielle Franco and First Lady Janja. The meeting aimed to discuss the strategic role of women in global development.
In the panel Digital Governance: Misogyny and Disinformation, researcher Luciane Belin from the Laboratory of Internet and Social Network Studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (NetLab UFRJ) presented the study "Learn to Avoid ‘That Type’ of Woman’: Discursive Strategies and Monetization of Misogyny on YouTube", carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Women.
“We observed 137 channels where hate speech and misogynistic content was actually identified on YouTube. These videos reached a lot of people, with an average of 152 thousand subscribers. So, a large community is formed around this content, which has an average of 28.8 million views per video and together totals more than 4 billion. They mobilize their audience and generate a lot of discussion on the internet,” explained Belin.
The researcher warned about the profits generated by this content, both for producers and platforms, and defended the need for regulation to combat this practice.
