In recent years, the discussion about abortion has been at the forefront of the debate on sexual and reproductive rights in Brazil and has become a central issue in the intensification of national political polarization. As in countries like the United States, the right to terminate a pregnancy legally, safely, and free of charge has been the target of disinformation campaigns and institutional, legislative, and public opinion attacks.
Following the intense mobilization around ADPF 442 in 2023, which puts the decriminalization of abortion under discussion through the Judiciary, the issue was also intensely discussed in 2024, due to bill 1904, which proposed setbacks in relation to the rights already won by Brazilian women.
The discussion of the Bill is the central theme of the report "Protecting our children": Bill 1904 leads the debate on abortion in 2024, which collected and analyzed publications that mention abortion or deal with Bill 1904/2024 on different digital platforms. The research identifies the main characters and narratives associated with the discussion in 2024 and analyzes digital advertising about abortion on Meta's platforms, outlining an overview of this debate throughout 2024.
