The Internet and Social Network Studies Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (NetLab UFRJ) participated in the 5th Meeting of the Brazilian Chapter of the Latin Union of Political Economy of Information, Communication and Culture (ULEPICC), organized in Brazil between November 26th and 28th, 2014.

The event is a partnership between ULEPICC and the Teaching and Research Coordination (COEP) of the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT).

Hosted at the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT) and at the UFRJ School of Communication (ECO-UFRJ), the meeting was themed “Communication, Culture, Information and Democracy: tensions and contradictions”. Research in the field of technology, communication and culture was presented to advance understanding on the progress of various technologies and their impact on civil society.

NetLab UFRJ presented their research paper “Recommendation systems as tastemakers: collaborative filtering as a marketing strategy for cultural products on the Internet”. The study delves into the structuring of recommendation systems that use data filtering to encourage the consumption of content in the virtual environment.

The research was published in English in 2018 in an article in the journal Observatorio (OBS*), available online.
